Upper Dolpo Trek is set into motion through hypnotized vistas of colossal wide mountains ranges. Moving into the remoteness is the best part of Upper Dolpo. Stepping in an elevation of 4,300 meter above sea level you can learn about the Bon Po religion, which is supposed to be the best bit of trek. It does not end here as the altitude of 5,360 meter is eagerly waiting for your arrival. Spending meaningful time in this trip will bring concealment with several enigmas. Shey Phoksundo National Park, Saldang La, Shey Gompa and crossing the Kang La pass will be the key destinations of this trek.

Arrive in TIA, Kathmandu and transfer to hotel
We take it as our honor to welcome you at Tribhuvan International Airport, Kathmandu. Our representative members will support you in transferring to a hotel. After taking some time to freshen up you will be briefed about the trip then you will join in welcome dinner later in the evening. If you don’t feel tired then you can visit the buzzing Thamel town where you can enjoy live music and good food. Stay overnight in hotel.
Sightseeing in Kathmandu and trek preparation
This is your second day at Kathmandu and you will set out for city sightseeing. Keeping in mind the time you will cover major touristic and historic areas of Kathmandu city such as Kathmandu Durbar Square, Swyambhunath, Pashupatinath and Bouddhanath. Then, you will return to the hotel on time as you have been given formal overview about the trip, guide and some technical information. After that you will re-check your equipment and get sound sleep. Stay overnight in hotel.
Flight to Pokhara frFlight to Nepalgunj 1hrsom Kathmandu then drive to Beni (850m)
On the third day, we will be taking a flight from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj. The flight is about an hour and you will enter the southern part of Nepal. Nepalgunj is a town located close to Nepal-India border and is the entry way to Simikot. When in the town we will be visiting the mini-zoo, local market and some villages so you will get to know the life style of the local people living in the plains. Stay overnight in lodge.
Flight to Jhuphal 45min and trek to Dunai (2,850m) 2-3hrs
After spending a memorable day in Nepalgunj, on the fourth day you will fly to Jhupal after taking breakfast. Jhuphal is 45 mins from Nepalgunj and it is a striking town situated at the foothills of the Himalaya where you can observe Dhaulagiri and Annapurna mountains. We will stroll through the pastureland to the Bheri River that will lead to our next destination– Dunai, the administrative headquarter of the Dolpo region. Stay overnight in tented camp.
Trek to Ankhe (2,896m) 5-6hr
On the fifth day we will be taking a leave from Dunai and hike towards Ankhe. This trek will be memorable one as we will be walking alongside rivers and streams and paths crossing through suspension bridges and head to the west, which will lead us to the section of barren land namely Thulo Bheri Valley. We will continue the days trek and head towards Phoksundo River valley and along the way enjoy the majestic view of Kagmara Peak. We will then hike downhill through a lush green jungle where you can enjoy the cool breeze along with various local flora and fauna. The path will eventually take us to Ankhe. Stay overnight in tented camp.
Trek to Sulighat 5-6hrs
After taking rest from the previous day’s hike we will move ahead further in our trip to reach Sulighat. The way to reach our next destination will be an interesting one as we will be climbing and descending through the local forest through wooded riverbank. After crossing the forest we will ascend all the way to verdant slope situated over the river then a downhill hike enclosed by lush forest will takes us to Sulighat. Stay overnight in lodge.
Phoksundo Lake (3,611m) 4-5hrs
The nature’s awe will keep on increasing the the seventh day of the trek as we will pass through remote valleys on the lap of the mighty mountains towards Phoksundo lake. We will be hiking along the banks of Pungmo River after crossing the suspension bridge. Trekking towards today’s destination we will pass through Ringmo village known for its exotic geographical location and encounter various waterfalls before reaching the Phoksundo Lake located over 3,500 meters above the sea level. Stay overnight in tented camp.
Today you will use up the day to acclimatize as you will need it before gaining more altitude. We suggest that you take some stroll around the area rather than staying inside the camp. During this day, you can take a short hike to Ringmo village where you can visit ancient Tibetan Monastery. After completing the short hike you can return back to our camp site and rest for the upcoming journey ahead. Stay overnight in tented camp.
Trek to Phoksundo Khola 4-5hrs
The ninth day of the trek will take us towards Phoksundo Khola. We will be trekking through a remote trail which is not just peaceful but also naturally rewarding. On this day we will walk through remote valley after passing a marsh trail. Finally we will turn up at Phoksundo Khola where we will set up the camp for the night.
Trek to Phoksundo Bhanjyang 6-7hrs
The tenth day of the trip will take us further north-east. We will be hiking through the northern side that meets the Phoksundo Khola. We will be crossing wooden bridges draped with prayer flags heading towards a difficult ascend which will take us to next the valley in the region from where we can see the Kang La Pass. We will set up camp close to the pass. From here you can also enjoy the mesmerizing view of Chhamlang Peak. Stay overnight in tented camp.
Trek to Shey Gompa (4,500m) via Kang La Pass (5,360m) 5-6hrs
On the following day we will gear up for a vertical trail climbing relatively difficult pass. From the Kang-La Pass we will also be able to see the huge valley that is divided by flowing river. We will then descend the valley strolling all along the bank of the river and pass through the meadow we can observe Mountain Goa. The hiking region is also full of Yaks and Sheeps that the local animal herders bring to graze. We with then reach Shey Gompa where we will set camp for the night.
Acclimatization and rest day
You might feel lucky that you are using Shey Gompa as an acclimatization spot. The Gompa is famous for the golden statue seat that belongs to Shakyamuni Buddha. We will also use up the day by hiking through the Shey village which is renowned for ancient Pre-Buddhist tradition. You can learn the local traditions and lifestyle of the people. Stay overnight in tented camp.
Trek to Namduna Gaun (4,800m) via Saldang La (5,200m) 6-7hrs
After acclimatizing at Shey Gompa, on the thirteenth day we will start the day by heading through the enjoyable trail amid Juniper trees from where we will take a downhill trek. Continuing the trek through uneven trail we will reach Saldang La Pass from where we will head towards Namduna Gaun and will visit Namgung monastery. You can learn a lot about the history, tradition and culture of the area while in the area. We will rest for the day at a teahouse.
Trek to Saldang (3,620m) 4-5hrs
We will leave the charming village of Namduna Gaun on day 14 and head towards Saldang through dusky unfertile mountain trails. After a trek of about 3 to 4 hours we will reach Saldang Village which is considered as the largest village of inner Dolpo area. During your stay here you can enjoy the life on the remote country side. Learn about the way of living and farming and cattle rearing. This will be a learning experience for you. Stay overnight in teahouse.
Trek to Yangze Gompa (4,960m) 4-5hrs
On the following day we will head uphill to the Northern parts beside the Nagon Khola walking through the remote barren region. Then, we will cross through Marang and Ki village alongside the tributary of Panzang River to reach Yangze Gompa. Here you can observe the ancient Bon-Po Monastery which is known for its rich Buddhist heritage. Stay overnight in teahouse.
Trek to Sibu (4,560m) 6-7hrs
There are two trekking trails that will lead us to Sibu. The first one will take you back to Saldang village. And if we take the other trail we will be crossing Nam Khong Khola to reach Namdo village. Here, we will be visiting the famous Namdo monastery after which we will head towards our destination—Sibu. Stay overnight in tented camp.
Trek to Jeng La Phedi (4,900m) 5-6hrs
The trek on this day will take us along the Nam Khong Khola while crossing various caravans and we will be heading to Tibetan border. Facing towards the East we will journey towards Jeng La Phedi (4,900m) where the camp will be set up in the beautiful atmosphere and we will stay overnight in a tented camp.
Trek to Tokyu Gaon (4,209m) via Jeng La Pass (5,090m) 5-6hrs
An early morning trek awaits us on day 18 towards Jeng La Pass. During the hike we will be viewing the amazing northern face of massive Mount Dhaulagiri. We will then trek downhill to reach Tarap Valley. It is a mesmerizing valley with elevated mountains that extended to Tarap Chu River.
Trek to Dho Tarap (4,040m) 4-5hrs
Trekking downward on the plain valley we will enter inner Dolpo Region viewing the range of Ladakh Himalaya. Here, you will get to experience Buddhist sects and again a short stroll will take us to Dho Tarap where we will stay overnight in a tented camp.
On this day, we will take some rest and explore Dho Tarap village which is enclosed by uneven stone walls. You will move out to explore the settlement of Magar and Buddhist Gompa which is settled near to the camp.
Trek to Tarap Khola (3,800m) 6-7hrs
The next day we will be hiking downhill through a gorge and then through a thick Juniper tree line where we can spot the Himalayan blue sheep in its natural habitat. The camp for this day will be set on the pleasant meadow known as Kamakharka.
Trek to Khanigaon (3,150m) 4-5hrs
On Day 22 we will trek towards the gorge of the Tarap River. Strolling through the pass we will be walking through an exhilarating valley that will take us to the camping spot ‘Tarap Khola’ at Khanigaon.
Trek to Tarakot (2,537m) 4-5hrs
The very next day, we will head towards Tarakot through Lalberi village, crossing through lush forest. Tarakot is a culturally rich place where we will visit the Sandul Gompa, Tarap Chu and hike along the Barbung Khola. The camp will be set close to police post you are totally safe.
Trek to Dunai (2,140m) 5-6hrs
Trekking behind the Bheri River we will reach Lawan village and upon further crossing the river one more time we will reach Dunai through a delightful gorge. Stay overnight in lodge.
Trek to Jhuphal 2-3hrs
On this day, we will head to Jhupal through the Bheri River viewing the lovely and attractive panoramic view of the landscape as we cross Dhupichaur and Ruggad village. The trek will continue through Kalagaonda village and Motipur village.
Flight to Nepalgunj and Kathmandu
On day 26 we will take an early flight to Nepalgunj from Jhupal and another flight to Kathmandu. Upon reaching TIA you will be transferred to your hotel and in the evening you will participate in farewell program.
This is considered as the concluding day as per the set itinerary. So, if you wish you can go for shopping till the departure time. Then, you will be transferred to TIA for the last time so that you can head towards your home town or for next destinations. We are thankful that you have given us an opportunity to serve you.
